About Us
A very short history of the formation of the Lower Moore River Working Group.
In 1997 a member of the Caraban Action Group approached the then Waterways Commission to see if they were in a position to undertake studies on the water quality of the Lower Moore River as they had a number of concerns about long term developments along the river and potential risks to its health. The Commission was unable to assist as the work required was outside its chamber.
Following departmental restructure and the creation of the Water and Rivers Commission the Community Associations of the Lower Moore River were approached to see if they were interested in developing an application for National Heritage Trust (NHT) funding. The Guilderton Community Association expressed interest, and an application was developed by the Association in conjunction with the Water and Rivers Commission. An application was submitted in March 1998 and in November 1998 notification was received that the application was successful.
In March 1999 the Guilderton Community Association convened a meeting of identified stakeholders with a view to establishing a subcommittee. A large turnout resulted in an executive group of project leader, secretary and a treasurer being appointed. The meeting was adjoined as no landholders with holdings along the river were present. Each landholder was contacted personally and invited to the next meeting. At this meeting the majority attended.
A "Working Group" was established including any landholder who wished to participate. It was decided that the landholders would all be included in all decisions made even if they were not actively participating. All meeting minutes and significant documentation is sent to them. A few of the landholders have continued as active working group members. It was decided that the group would have the title "Lower Moore River Rehabilitation Working Group". In mid 2001 this title was shortened to: “Lower Moore River Working Group”.
At the May 2002 meeting the group resolved to pursue incorporation in its own right to alleviate administration problems, particularly if the group continued to operate after the completion of the NHT funded project. The group applied for funding through Envirofund to upgrade the riverside walk trail, the application was successful. The application for incorporation was also successful.
The NHT funded project "Rehabilitation of the Lower Moore River", ended on 31st December 2002.The inaugural meeting of the Lower Moore River Working Group Incorporated was held in the Guilderton Community Hall on Wednesday 19th February 2003.
