Completed Projects
In 1998 the Guilderton Community Association (GCA), in conjunction with the Water & Rivers Commission, applied for funding of $162,000 over 3 years from the Natural Heritage Trust (NHT) to rehabilitate and revegetate 15 km of the Lower Moore River from the mouth to the confluence of Gingin Brook. Funding was received in 1999 and a working group was established to plan, implement and control activities as formulated in the grant application. The group was named 'Lower Moore River Rehabilitation Working Group.' Later shortened to 'Lower Moore River Working Group.’
The Water & Rivers Commission through Jonelle Black commissioned Nicole Siemon of Ecosystem Management Services to prepare an Action Management Plan. Following consultation with stakeholders, a Status Report and River Action Plan were prepared and presented to the Group. The River Action Plan was launched at Guilderton bv Senator Sue Knowles on Saturday 3rd March 2001. NHT Project ($162,000)
The 3-year project was extended one year finishing on 31st December 2002. Major achievements:

Walk Trail
Following completion of the Natural Heritage Trust project, the Group incorporated and successfully applied to Envirofund to install a walk trail including a board walk along the old Art Trail at the end of Stephens Crescent This $30,000 project was completed in 2003. Major achievements:

Silver Creek Walk Trail |
Escarpment DetourFunding was again sought from Envirofund 2 to construct a detour around the deteriorating river escarpment. Envirofund provided $4,519, Gingin Land Conservation District Committee provided $2,000 and the Group $8,900. This project was completed in 2004. Major achievements of this project were:

The Lower Moore River Working Group was awarded the 2004 Premier's Australia Day Active Citizenship Award for a community group.Silver Creek Reserve
A Management Plan for Silver Creek Reserve was commissioned from consultant, Richard Hammond in 2005. Funding through Gingin Shire. Available early 2006. Application for a Community Conservation Grant of $5,000 was successful in 2005. This project is for Rehabilitation of Silver Creek Reserve and was initiated by our discussions with Richard Hammond. Recent Projects
The past few years have seen many new projects completed with funding provided by The Department of Water, Gingin Shire, The Department of Planning and Infrastructure and Conservation and Land Management. Projects include;
- Major replanting of natives in the Silver Creek Reserve
- A new walking trail in the Silver Creek Reserve including a raised walkway section and crushed limestone pathway
- Major fencing and bollard placement in deteriorated areas in the Silver Creek Reserve
- Sandbagging in high erosion areas of the river
- Rushes and Sedges replanting on erosion areas and into sandbagging areas
- A new fishing platform in the Silver Creek Reserve
- Limestone steps to the river near Stephens Crescent
- Engineering design works for erosion control and extension of existing boardwalk
- Funding and building a BBQ at the Lancelin Bridge Area rest site
Weed control Program
Targets Japanese/Brazilian Peppers, Lovegrass, Veldt grass, Geraldton Carnation weed and Wavy Gladiolus. The CSIRO have assisted in control of Bridal Creeper by providing biocontrols, ie Leafhoppers, Rust fungus and Beetles.
Education
As well as the Moore River Action Plan and Water Quality & Hydrodynamics of the Moore River Estuary and Surrounds being available in libraries, we have established the Guilderton Regional Herbarium, presented a paper 'The Spirit of Landcare' at the State Landcare Conference 2001, conducted a public forum on water quality (2002), supported UWA students in carrying out fauna surveys in 2002, 2004 and 2005, written news articles for Moore River News, designed, produced and installed 3 interpretive signs The Group would like to acknowledge the valuable assistance of the Shire of Gingin in providing administration funding and ongoing project support.
